SAN FRANCISCO -- Award-winning composer and wind player Daniel Riera will release his new album, Future Primitive, on Sunday, Sept. 29 in a live audio/video recording at Airship Laboratories in Richmond, CA. The album consists of nine original compositions that draw from Riera’s love of jazz, hip-hop, funk, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music.
Riera, a San Francisco native of Mexican, Puerto Rican and Cuban heritage, explores the clash between today’s hyper-technological lifestyle and the wisdom of his ancestors with this new project.
“My inspiration for Future Primitive is envisioning a future where ancient cultural traditions find new expressions through technology,” he says.
The key to Riera’s unique sound is the electronic wind instrument, (EWI), a digital controller that is played like a saxophone. He uses the EWI to control his self-built analog modular synthesizer, creating custom sounds and performing them with the same fluidity and expression that he has on acoustic flute.
“Through the combination of the EWI and modular synth I’ve found a new voice, one that allows me infinite tonal variations, extended range from sub-bass to ultrasonic, and even harmonies and chords. At times the modular synth has a mind of its own, the sounds that come out of it can be unpredictable due to the chaotic nature of the analog circuitry, and they continually inspire and take me into uncharted direction,” he says.
Riera won the national ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award at age 17 while attending San Francisco School of the Arts. He attended Berklee College of Music as a merit scholar where he earned his degree in Music Synthesis. For the past sixteen years he has worked professionally as a multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and recording engineer. Riera is musical director of the Latin-alternative band, Soltron, featured on NPR’s Alt.Latino Listeners Pick.
Future Primitive features Bay Area heavy-weights such as keyboardist Kev Choice, (solo artist, Lauryn Hill, Wiz Khalifa); bassist Uriah Duffy (Whitesnake, Points North); Dame Drummer (solo artist, Fantastic Negrito); percussionist Ahkeel Mestayer (Soltron, Idris Ackamoor and the Pyramids); vocalist Viveca Hawkins (The Memorials); and vocalist Camille Mai (Rebirth Canal).
The album will be available on September 29, 2019 on all digital music platforms. Tickets for the release concert can be found by searching “Daniel Riera” or “Future Primitive” on Eventbrite. More information and sound samples can be found at www.danielrieramusic.com
